St. Michael’s Lutheran Church (ELCA) celebrates the central place music plays in our ministry and mission. We are seeking staff to both continue and expand the scope of this tradition.
Organist/Adult Choir Director: Responsibilities include playing for two traditional liturgical Sunday morning worship services on our Schlicker pipe organ, (July and August, one service); weekly evening Adult Choir rehearsals, (Sept.-June); occasional work with soloists, both vocal and instrumental. Approx. 15 hours/week. Salary negotiable.
Children and Youth Choirs’ Director/Contemporary Worship Coordinator: Responsibilities include weekly (Sept.- June) Children’s and Youth Choirs’ rehearsals, preparing to participate regularly in worship services; working with soloists and instrumentalists; coordinating our Sunday evening contemporary worship service. Approx. 10 hours/week. Salary negotiable.

Organist/Adult Choir Director

Overall Responsibility:
The most important role of the Organist/Adult Choir Director is to lead the congregation in
worship. The congregation should be able to sing the liturgy and hymns well, as led by the organ
or another instrument(s).
Key Responsibilities:
1. Prepare, practice, and play for two Sunday morning services per week
2. Prepare and rehearse Adult Choir each week
3. Arrange and prepare occasional outreach opportunities for our music participants
4. Arrange for and rehearse instrumental musicians who perform solos or accompany choir or congregation, including Syracuse Symphony performers and church members
5. Participate in worship planning sessions with the Pastor, their direct supervisor
6. Determine the budget for the music program. Maintain music library, and plan for and order new music for the choirs, staying within the budget
7. Submit regular newsletter articles
8. Arrange for the tuning of the organ and pianos at church
9. Serve as an ex officio member of, and attend meetings of, the Worship and Music Committee; attend Annual Congregational Meetings
10. Play for, and have first refusal for, weddings and funerals at St. Michael’s
11. Assist as needed/requested in Sunday School activities, Vacation Bible School, and occasional church events
12. Arrange for a substitute when necessary.
13. Give 30 days notice of intent to terminate employment.
Terms of Employment:
